Country singer Chely Wright comes out as a lesbian

Country singer Chely Wright is set to announce that she is a lesbian in the next issue of People Magazine, reports by indicate.

The singer, 39 years old and originally from Wellsville, Kansas, will become the first country singer to admit that she is a lesbian.

Wright, who was named Top New Female Vocalist in 1999 by the Academy of Country Music, has seven albums under her belt.

The would be announcement is somewhat surprising as she has been previously linked to fellow country singer Brad Paisley. Incidentally Paisley was Top New Male Vocalist during the same year Wright won.

She also wrote songs for Paisley, Mindy Smith, Richard Marx and a tope ten hit for Clay Walker. She plays the guitar and the piano.

The entertainer will be releasing a new album on May 4 called Lifted Off the Ground. Her memoir, Like Me, will be released on the same day.
